How Number Pattern Puzzles Work

Learn to test arithmetic, alternating and position-based patterns.

Learn the approach

A missing number is not solved merely by finding a rule that fits the visible terms; many formulas can match a short sequence. Good puzzle design supplies enough information to make an intended simple rule clear. Begin by checking the differences between adjacent terms.

If the differences are constant, consider addition. If the ratios are constant and defined, consider multiplication. If neither works, check alternating positions: the first, third and fifth terms may form one sequence while the second and fourth form another.

Other common constructions include squares, triangular numbers and sums of preceding terms. Write your candidate rule in words, then confirm that it works at every step—not only the last pair of terms. Reject a rule requiring different exceptions for each value.

When more than one plausible rule remains, use the answer choices or a hint, rather than pretending the puzzle has a mathematically unique solution. Number Pattern Master provides repeatable practice with explained answers.

Practice drill: attempt one round without a timer where possible. Explain your solution process in a sentence, then replay a different board. If a new answer appears immediately obvious, ask which consistent rule makes it correct rather than trusting intuition alone.
